Sealants

The biting surface of the back teeth naturally have pits and grooves. These are present to aid in the breakdown of food as you chew. In some cases these grooves are very deep and catch food and cavity causing bacteria. In addition, they are very difficult to clean leaving the tooth very susceptible to decay.

A sealant is a flowable plastic material that fills the pits and fissures of the tooth. When it hardens, it effectively seals the tooth thereby preventing cavity formation, while maintaining the natural aesthetic beauty of the tooth.

The pits and fissures on the

biting surface of the tooth collect plaque and can cause cavities

After sealing the tooth, there are fewer places for plaque to accumulate so the tooth is easier to keep clean.
