Air Abrasion
Air abrasion is a wonderful technology that has been around since the late 1990’s. It allows us to prepare small cavities in teeth without the annoying sound or vibration of the drill. More importantly, we can often do so without the use of dental freezing.
Air abrasion works by applying a fine stream of air under pressure with a small amount of abrasive powder. It selectively removes soft tooth structure (the cavity) while having very little effect on good tooth structure. It may be the most conservative way we have to prepare a tooth. Since it seals as it removes the cavity, local anaesthesia is often not required.
